Stephen Knight has been appointed as Operations Director of London Trading Standards. Stephen took up post on 29th October 2018 and will lead the partnership of 33 local authority trading standards services across London.

Stephen has a long background in London government, having spent 20 years as a senior Councillor in Richmond upon Thames, four years as a city-wide London Assembly Member holding the Mayor of London to account at City Hall and 12 years working for London Councils as an adviser.

At Richmond upon Thames Council, he held a number of leading roles including deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for resources, leader of the opposition and cabinet member for education. On the London Assembly, Stephen chaired both the Assembly’s economy and the environment committees and was deputy chair of the budget committee. He also served on the London Fire authority and was vice chair of its resources committee.

Stephen has also served on national Local Government Association (LGA) boards and committees and worked as a Peer Councillor with the IDeA, supporting other councils around the country.

Stephen said: “I am delighted to be taking on the exciting challenge of leading the partnership of trading standards services across London. Borough trading standards services are doing an incredibly good job of protecting consumers in a wide range of areas despite severe funding cuts and dwindling staffing levels in recent years.

“Increasing the depth and breadth of collaboration across London, building relationships with stakeholders and increasing our visibility with decision makers will all be key to the success of LTS in the years to come, especially with the new challenges associated with Brexit.”
